Temporal dynamics of the consistency e¡ect in reading Chinese: an event-related potentials study
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study aimed to explore the temporal dynamics of the consistency e¡ect in reading Chinese phonograms. Highconsistency and low-consistency characters were used in the homophone judgment task, and the event-related potentials were recorded. The data showed that low-consistency characters elicited greater N170 amplitude in the temporal^ occipital region and greater P200 amplitude in the frontal region than highconsistency characters, whereas high-consistency characters showedgreater amplitude of theN400 negativity than low-consistency characters. These ¢ndings can be interpreted as indicating that low-consistency characters produce a greater activation for the initial analysis of the orthographical andphonologicalrepresentations, whereas high-consistency characters involve a greater lexical competition in the later stage. متن کاملOrthographic combinability and phonological consistency effects in reading Chinese phonograms: an event-related potential study.
In this study, event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to trace the temporal dynamics of phonological consistency and phonetic combinability in the reading of Chinese phonograms. The data showed a significant consistency-by-combinability interaction at N170. High phonetic combinability characters elicited greater negativity at N170 than did low phonetic combinability characters, and the combi...
متن کاملEvent-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces
Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...
متن کاملAuditory and speech processing and reading development in Chinese school children: behavioural and ERP evidence.
By measuring behavioural performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) this study investigated the extent to which Chinese school children's reading development is influenced by their skills in auditory, speech, and temporal processing. In Experiment 1, 102 normal school children's performance in pure tone temporal order judgment, tone frequency discrimination, temporal interval discriminatio...
متن کاملThe time course of brain activity in reading English and Chinese: an ERP study of Chinese bilinguals.
Chinese bilinguals performed a delayed naming task, reading both Chinese characters and English words, while EEGs were recorded by a 128-channel system. Principle component analysis (PCA) of Event Related Potentials (ERP) from the onset of the stimulus suggested a temporal unfolding of graphic, phonological, and semantic processing that depended on both language and word frequency. At 150 msec,...
